Barrio Escalante

The part of San José people head to when they want to eat well, have a coffee on a quiet street, or walk home after dinner.

Where it is

Escalante sits just east of downtown San José, on the way to San Pedro and Montes de Oca. Older family homes share the streets with small restaurants, galleries and new residential towers like Bö Escalante, which stands 100 metres east and 100 metres north of Parque Francia.

Calle 33: the Paseo Gastronómico La Luz

The neighbourhood is best known for one street. Calle 33, known as the Paseo Gastronómico La Luz, is lined with dozens of places to eat and drink, from craft beer bars to Mediterranean and fusion kitchens, and it has become San José's restaurant row.
